Backups over the Internet can be long and slow without the proper technology. The BackUp Solution Software addresses these problems in several ways. The initial backup will be the longest since all of your files need to be transferred to the remote data storage centers. To minimize the time this will take, several methods are employed. First all the files on your computer which are common to many people only transferred once. Many application and system files do not need to be transferred since there is already a copy stored in the data center. If you ever need to restore one of these files they are still available to you. The second feature is data compression of all your unique files. Typically the compression algorithms allow your data to be compressed to about half the size of the original, allowing faster transmission of these files. Utilizing these methods, the initial backup can be significantly speeded up. Even over dial-up connections, you can perform the initial backup. Using any higher speed connection such as ISDN, DSL or cable, the initial backup usually runs in a few hours.
After the initial transfer, subsequent backups are very quick and efficient. Any new files are sent to the data center using the compression technology discussed above. The real time saver is the use of Delta Block technology to determine the changed portion of existing files, and only send that portion of the file. So, rather than backing up an entire large database file each time you add a record, only the changed portion of the file needs to be sent, and that is compressed also. This results in a significant reduction in the amount of data that needs to be sent to the offsite storage. It also results in the ability to restore your entire computer to the exact state it was in as of any backup (ten versions of each file are retained). These technologies result in typical backup times of only a few minutes using a standard dial-up connection. |
